Accountants Should be at The Forefront of Cyber Security

Accountants deal with a tremendous amount of sensitive customer information on a daily basis. According to a new report conducted by the ACCA USA, or a U.S. arm of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, and Pace University nearly 40 percent of respondents said they have no knowledge of company policy on data encryption in transit or in storage.

“For accountants, measures must be taken to ensure that the sensitive personal and corporate financial information they handle is safe: accountants need to be at the forefront of cyber security.

— Dr. Jonathan Hill, Interim Dean, Pace University Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems

When conducting the report, ACCA members were asked specifically about their company policies and personal practices regarding cyber security. The report pointing out numerous different contradictions with what the participants said they knew versus what they actually knew about their cyber security policies, regardless of the size of the organization involved.

“We’re at a point now with these huge break-ins that are so prevalent in the media. Barely a day goes by when we don’t learn of a Fortune 500 company or a government agency that has had some type of cyber break-in. State legislatures, for example, are driven to find someone to hold accountable, and they’re looking at those very same financial professionals.

— Dr. Jonathan Hill, Interim Dean, Pace University Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems

It's important to understand that no matter how safe you think you are, a cyber security breach could happen to you at any time if you don't actually follow through with the policies you are planning on or have already implemented. If a cyber security breach happens to you, you are putting your firm and your most valued customer's personal information at risk.
