Bilingual Billing

The problem is right in front of you. If your patients can't understand the statements you send them, they won't pay as quickly as you'd like. You'll probably receive a lot of unnecessary phone calls from confused patients demanding an explanation. Some patients may decide to change healthcare providers altogether. The US Census Bureau projects that the Hispanic population of the United States will reach 102.6 million as of July 1, 2050. According to this projection, Hispanics will constitute 24% of the nation’s total population on that date. Many Hispanics and other recent immigrants have Low English Proficiency (LEP).

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination by all medical care providers on the basis of national origin for all patients who receive Medicaid, Medicare Part A, or other government money. Healthcare facilities are required by this law to use a bilingual staff member or an interpreter so the patient who does not speak English well can explain his or her medical problem, ask questions and understand the treatment just as well as patients who speak English as their primary language. This is good healthcare.

If you have LEP patients, bilingual statements can provide all column headings and other static information in both English and another language. Multilingual cover letters explaining the bill or requesting payment can be printed in English on the front and in Spanish, or other languages appropriate to your patient demographics on the back. This is good business.
